Poker outs and odds

Count your outs, the cards that complete your hand, and type the number below. You get the exact chance of hitting on the next card and by the river, next to the quick mental-math shortcut: multiply outs by 2 for one card to come, by 4 for two.

How it works

There are 52 cards. On the flop you can see five of them (your two and three on the board), so 47 are unseen. Each out is one of those 47. The chance of hitting on the next card is outs ÷ 47 on the flop and outs ÷ 46 on the turn. For both cards to come, it is 1 minus the chance of missing twice, which this page calculates exactly.

The rule of 2 and 4 is the shortcut: outs × 2 is close for one card, outs × 4 is close for two. It drifts high above about 8 outs. For 9 outs the rule says 36% and the exact number is 35%. Close enough for a hand in progress.

Counting outs is the hard part. Do not count a card if it might also help your opponent more than you.

Common questions

What are outs in poker?
Outs are the cards left in the deck that would improve your hand to a winner. A flush draw has 9 outs, an open-ended straight draw has 8, and a gutshot has 4.

What is the rule of 2 and 4?
A shortcut for your chance of hitting. Multiply your outs by 2 when one card is to come, and by 4 when two cards are to come. It gives a percentage within a point or two for small draws.

What are the odds of hitting a flush draw by the river?
With 9 outs on the flop, about 35%. On the turn, with one card to come, it is about 20%.
